Breast cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the breast tissue. It is the most common cancer among women worldwide and can also occur in men. Breast cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the breast tissue grow and divide uncontrollably, forming a tumor. The tumor can invade nearby tissues and spread to other parts of the body through the lymphatic system or bloodstream.

There are several types of breast cancer, including ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC), invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC), and inflammatory breast cancer (IBC). DCIS is a non-invasive type of breast cancer that is confined to the milk ducts, while IDC and ILC are invasive types that have spread beyond the milk ducts. IBC is a rare and aggressive type of breast cancer that can cause the breast to become red, swollen, and warm to the touch.

The exact cause of breast cancer is unknown, but certain risk factors can increase a person's likelihood of developing the disease. These risk factors include age, gender, family history of breast cancer, genetic mutations, hormonal factors, and lifestyle factors such as alcohol consumption and obesity.

Symptoms of breast cancer can include a lump or thickening in the breast or underarm, changes in breast size or shape, nipple discharge or inversion, and skin changes such as redness or dimpling. However, some people with breast cancer may not experience any symptoms at all.

Treatment for breast cancer depends on the type and stage of the cancer, as well as the person's overall health and preferences. Treatment options may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy, or a combination of these approaches.

Early detection and treatment of breast cancer can improve a person's chances of survival. Regular breast cancer screening, including mammograms and clinical breast exams, is recommended for women starting at age 40 or earlier for those with certain risk factors.
